Risks and Dangers of Belly Button Rings

If are you considering getting a belly piercing or recently got one, you should be fully aware of all the dangers associated with belly button rings. If you are well educated and informed on how to take care of your piercing, the dangers can be significantly minimized. The amount of time it takes to heal this type of piercing is sometimes longer than at other areas of the body. This is due to bending and other position disturbances in that area the body.
Naturally as with any piercing, one of the biggest threats to your health occurs through infections. These can occur through the use of unsterilized equipment or poor aftercare. You must be vigilant about cleaning the area twice a day with an antibacterial soap. The area can be very painful once an infection appears, typically swelling and burning. If your infection gets out of hand, you should visit a doctor as soon as possible.
Another common problem is an allergic reaction to belly button rings. If you have any history with allergies to jewelry, you may already be aware of your body's intolerance for certain types of metal. It is important to spend a little more for higher quality jewelry to reduce your risk of an allergy occurring. If you notice an allergic reaction, you should remove the jewelry immediately. Remember to clean the jewelry before putting it in.
You can also run into problems with your belly button rings snagging on clothing, bedding or whatever else you might come in contact with. The consequences of this can range from minor discomfort to completely ripping out the piercing, causing pain and blood loss. To reduce your risk of tearing and snagging, avoid wearing dangling jewelry that could catch on things. Wearing tight clothing can also cause complications with your piercing.
